From the Veranda to the World: Sharing Our Regional Indian Food Stories
At Veranda Indian, we often say: “Indian food is regional, seasonal, and deeply personal.” And for us, this is more than a tagline. It’s the very reason we opened our doors in the first place.
When we moved to Australia, we noticed something missing from the Indian food scene. Menus across restaurants were starting to look eerily similar — butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, dal makhani — rich dishes, delicious no doubt, but only a sliver of the full Indian story.
So, we decided to build something different. Something rooted in memory. In our verandas back home. In the smells of pickles fermenting in the sun. In the rhythms of the kitchen where masalas were ground fresh each day. In food that didn’t need to shout, but always made you feel something.
““Veranda Indian is our way of inviting you into our childhood memories — of meals cooked slowly, shared joyfully, and remembered forever.””
We recently had the privilege of sharing more of our story in an interview with Diversity Australia Magazine. The article dives deep into why we do what we do, how we honour regional diversity, and what it means to build something authentic in a city as multicultural as Sydney.

““It’s not about reinventing Indian food — it’s about remembering it properly.””

Every dish we serve is our way of preserving stories:
Homemade white butter, like our grandmothers made.
Spices hand-ground in-house, because no packet masala can carry our memories.
Rabri stirred patiently, just like Mum would do before guests arrived.
We hope when you visit Veranda Indian, you don’t just eat a meal. You feel something — familiarity, maybe nostalgia, or even curiosity. You feel invited.
Let’s keep the conversation going
If you’ve ever missed the food you grew up with, or longed to introduce your kids to the real flavours of home, we see you. And we’d love to welcome you to our Veranda soon.
Warmly,
Tavishi & Abhi
