Raksha Bhandan

Celebrating Sibling Love: Raksha Bandhan at Veranda Indian

If you grew up in India, chances are your earliest memories of August are tinged with the colours of silk threads, sweets wrapped in foil, and cheeky sibling banter. Raksha Bandhan, which translates to "the bond of protection," is a day that honours the sacred relationship between brothers and sisters. Traditionally, the sister ties a rakhi — a decorative thread — on her brother's wrist, praying for his wellbeing, while the brother promises to protect her in return. But like all beautiful traditions, this one too has grown with time.

Traditional Rakhi, Roli & Chawal

At Veranda Indian, we believe Raksha Bandhan is about more than just protection.

We see it as a celebration of one of the most special relationships we have in life — siblings. The ones who see you at your worst and love you anyway. The ones who know your secret snack stash, who fight with you over TV remotes and then fiercely defend you in the playground. This bond deserves its own day of joy and colour.

In a world where we're all moving fast and raising families overseas, festivals like Raksha Bandhan give us the chance to slow down and reconnect with what matters.

At Veranda Indian, we love finding ways to bring the spirit of home into our community here in Rouse Hill. And this year, we're continuing from where we left off last year.

Rakhi Workshop (August 2024)

Free Rakhi Making for Kids

On Sunday, 3rd August, from 3 to 5pm, we're opening up our Veranda for a free Rakhi-making event for kids! Let the young ones get creative, play with colourful threads and beads, and design their own rakhis for their beloved siblings.

Because love doesn't need to be store-bought. It just needs a little time and heart.

Whether your little ones are making rakhis for brothers, sisters, cousins, or best friends, this is a chance to celebrate love in its purest form.

So bring the kids along, watch them create, and maybe relive a bit of your own childhood while you're at it.

At Veranda Indian, we don't just serve food — we serve memories.

See you on the Veranda this Raksha Bandhan. Let's make it a celebration to remember.
